Rumson homes have been updated since its historical times. Many homes now have the asphalt shingle roofs. This type of roofing shingle contains “limestone” which is the organic ingredient that allows a certain type of bacteria to grow on roof. This growth creates a black streaking pattern which causes many beautiful homes to lack the great curb appeals it deserves. This particular strand of bacteria is called “gleocapsa magma” and can thrive on roof shingles be eating away at the organic material “limestone” which the shingle is made from. This is usually the first stage of roofing stains. Usually moss and lichens is the next phase of roof stains.
These growths can be treated, but not by pressure washing. Pressure washing or power washing a roof can cause more damage than the bacterium. Pressurized water can dislodge large amounts of roofing granules and shorten the life of the roof. The proper way of treating roof stains is by using an anti-microbial detergent which will kill the growth without harming or bleaching the shingle. Roofing cleaning should be approached as a “pest control” manner and a 100% kill ratio should be acheived in order to insure that the organism is eliminated completely. This will insure that the roof maintains a mold-free appearance for an extended period of time.
Thank you for taking the time to read our blog. This was journaled so Rumson families know there is a solution to maintaining the curb appeal of their beautiful Rumosn home.
