Tips on Roof Cleaning and Power Washing in Chatham NJ
Never Pressure Wash a Roof! Please don’t let anyone talk you into using any kind of device which is hooked up to a pressure washer. High pressure water does not kill the mold and bacteria that is staining you roof. Black staining on a roof is a bacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma. This bacteria, if looked at under a microscope, is actually green in color. It develops a UV repelling outer shell which allows it to survive in harsh conditions. It is this shell that allows it to live even through long periods of drought. Pressure washing a roof may create a perception of clean, but it is impossible to see at a microscopic level the amount of spores left behind. This will allow the stain to quickly regenerate. Our detergent is designed to melt the outer shell and kill the bacteria inside. It is through this complete elimination that allows a fully sterilized roof to stay clean for an extended period of time. See our Chatham Roof Cleaning and Power Washing Video.

Mold and mildew is usually what creates stains on siding. If only high pressure water is used then there is nothing to sterilize the sidings. Mold on vinyl can be cleaned by using a mild soap that contains a hint of bleach. It can be mild enough to prevent landscape damage yet strong enough to sterilize the siding. A siding will stay cleaner 4-6 times longer by pretreating with a disinfecting detergent. Beach, or sodium hypochlorite, is a safe non-carcinogenic product that is truly biodegradable. If you pour bleach outside and come back tomorrow you find only salt crystals. Bleach is truly a biodegradable chemical. This soft-wash approach can be used on vinyl, stucco, aluminum, and even painted surfaces.
Thanks for checking out our blog. Here you will find before and after photos of our work like the one you see here. This was a roof cleaning and house wash performed in Chatham NJ 07928. The roof was moderately stained by a type of bacteria that thrives on the limestone in the roofing shingle. Limestone is added for weight and strength to the shingle. since it is a organic material, the bacteria can thrive like an “all you can eat” buffet. The feeding process loosens the roofing granules. Then rain and wind dislodges the roofing granules and you may find large amounts in your gutters.
We do not use a powerwasher or any type of pressure washing machine to clean the roof. Roof treatments are approached like “pest control” since this bacteria is very contagious and difficult to remove. It can jump from roof to roof which is why you may notice your neighbors with the same staining.
Here is a very poor quality video that, if you look close, you will see the man on the roof spraying the roof wash detergent at a very low pressure.
