What’s Eating YOUR roof?
The stains on this roof are caused by a roof eating bacteria called Gleocapsa Magma. This bacteria feeds on the limestone in the roofing shingle. Limestone is an organic mineral made from the skeletal remains of marine animals. It’s the perfect food source for this specific strand of bacteria. As it feeds on the limestone it loosens the roofing granules. Loose granules will wash away much easier when it rains. When the roofing granules become too thin, the underlying membrane will become exposed to the suns harmful UV rays. It will then dry out, crack, and start to split. Performing a cleaning maintenance for a roofing shingle does far more than create a more pleasant curb appeal. It actually creates a longer lasting roofing shingle. And that equals savings!
Power washing a roof can cause long term damage
A pressure washer should never be used to clean a roof. We use a foaming salt based cleaner with a mild chlorination. There are 2 properties to the detergent: one is it disinfects the roof and kills the bacteria, and two is it penetrates the mold and cleans the shingle. The best results will come after the first rain. We never use a power washer to clean a roofing shingle. High pressure washing dislodges large amounts of roofing granules which leads to premature failure.
